Executive Overcomes Gaps in Her Resume
Executive Overcomes Gaps in Her ResumeExecutive Overcomes Gaps in Her ResumeJoann Starke details how she overcame HR prejudices and explained how sometimes your personal life needs mora attention than your work lifeBeing unemployed for more than two years didnt change Joann Starkes assessment of herbei ability to do her job. But it left a big question mark for a lot of potential employers.Being out of the workplace for so long was an issue, she said. Although I have a strong tech and marketing background, people would look at my resume and say, Its an impressive resume. But are you up to date? In several of the jobs I bewerberinterviewed for, I made it to the final round, but I think the reason I wasnt getting the final offer was because they were afraid to take a chance on me.Starke was laid off from her job as a senior product manager at Hewlett-Packard in October 2005. And although she started looking for a job right away, she said a perfect storm of events hit her life at that mo ment, forcing her to put her personal life above her work life. One of her parents was diagnosed with bone cancer, and Starke stepped up to take charge of medical care. Along the way, she said, her marriage fell apart. By January 2008, with my head screwed on straight, it was time to go back to work, she said.At that point, she hit the ground running, applying for jobs that she found on various job boards. I wasted four to six months, Starke said. I didnt realize what I was up against. There are millions of people on these sites. I got some interviews, but bedrngnis many. I was really disappointed.By June, she learned about Ladders. Although she was skeptical at first, she did sign up for MktgLadder and started using the service. In August, a newsletter on Ladders talked about how a resume should be focused on a persons unique value. I did the free resume critique, she said. I didnt feel I could spend the money for a professional to rewrite it, so I took their feedback, used the inf ormation in the newsletter, and then tore my resume apart. I completely re-did it, and I got much better response after that. The resources on the site are great, Starke continued. There are sample cover letters I used them a lot. I especially liked the personal-branding information. It helped me to start thinking about what it is that I bring to the table above everyone else. When I started to put that into my phone interviews, I started getting a better response.Reviewing past performanceOne way Starke prepared for initial phone interviews was to go through past performance evaluations looking for all the positives that were mentioned. It gave me a more powerful set of strengths that I could leverage and change by the key skills mentioned by the interviewer, she said. For example, strong leadership skills, first to get involved to resolve issues, take-charge nature. These were much stronger statements than simply saying that I work well in a matrixed organization.Something else tha t Starke said she learned from Ladders site was to get feedback during the interview that she could immediately use. Near the end of the interview I would ask, What concerns about my background do you have at this point? I discovered that it allowed me to hear their perception about me and if it wasnt accurate, I could counter them right then and there, rather than letting those perceptions become opinions that could be used against my candidacy, she said.Starke realized early in her search that she would most likely need to move from her home north of Sacramento. Companies had closed, and I knew I would have to move, she said. I targeted all the key tech areas Austin, Houston, Silicon Valley, the Pacific Northwest I started looking at the Golden Triangle in North Carolina, but then that area dried up. But I knew I would be moving.By September and October, with a new resume and a practiced interview patter, she was getting a lot of response to her resume. In November, she said, ever ything came to a halt. The venture capitalists pulled money, Microsoft announced layoffs, everything just stopped. I actually did a part-time job in retail, the hardest thing Ive ever done in my life. But it didnt stop her from moving forward. Around Christmas, she had a good lead with a major company separately, a profitable startup in the virtualization-technology sector came calling. She pursued both jobs through the winter by April, after four rounds of phone interviews and a face-to-face interview, she was hired by the start-up, Parallels, as the senior product marketing manager. For now she is working out of her Roseville, Calif., home. She will move to Seattle in June. While it was a long road to her new job, she said that in some ways, its fortunate that she left HP when she did. I do keep up on whats happening there, Starke said. HP is still laying off its nowhere near the company it used to be. Im not beaten down because I was in a tough working environment.I have a new vigor and energy level, Im learning a lot, and Im happy to be working, she continued. Its like having a brand-new life in front of you.

5 Reasons Why You Should Never Interview On An Empty Stomach
5 Reasons Why You Should Never Interview On An Empty Stomach5 Reasons Why You Should Never Interview On An Empty Stomach Weve all done it, rushed out of the door without having a bite to eat because were pushed for time. When you were a child, you probably heard you mustnt go to school without breakfast, as an adult that same advice rings in your ears but that great advice can often get ignored. When you were a child, an empty stomach hindered your chances of learning, now as an adult trying to function on an empty stomach can hinder your chances of success.Hungry and angry, its so common that it has its own word, hangry. Being hungry can make people irritable and even angry. Tolerance levels go down, and things begin to become a big deal when youre hungry. The belastung thing you want is road rage on the way to the vorstellungsgesprch so make sure you get something in your belly before leaving your home.Is your belly vocal when it wants food? Does it growl until you feed it? The last thing you would want during an important interview is for your belly to start to growl, it can be very off-putting. The person interviewing you will get distracted, and youll be so worried that your belly will keep growling that you wont be focused on delivering good answers to the interview questions.Being hungry can cause people to make bad choices. When youre hungry thinking clearly can drop by fifty percent, making solution finding exercises and decision making incredibly hard.Food psychologist Dr. C Fergusson carried out the research and found that sixty-two percent of adults got more answers wrong when they were hungry than if they werent.Hunger can cause your mind to drift which isnt good, if it starts to drift halfway through an interview . The brain needs a regular supply of glucose and if it doesnt get it the blood sugars start to drop and you wont be able to concentrate. The glucose is needed on average three to four hours so make sure you time it right before an interview. The lack of glucose can make you feel sad, the last feeling you want to have during an interview. To break down in tears while trying to explain why you left your last job isnt going to go well. Sometimes the shakes and sweats also accompany the sadness you can feel when youve not eaten.Need a reason to eat? Weve just given you fiveThis article was originally published on the Glassdoor UK Blog . Reprinted with permission.

The fastest-growing job in every state
The fastest-growing job in every stateThe fastest-growing job in every stateAfter bottoming out in 2010, the U.S. economy, and especially the labor market, has surged. Since then, the country added more than 18 million new jobs, employment satzs have returned to pre-recession levels, and the current unemployment rate of 3.6 percent is at a 50 year low.Nearly a decade later, employment growth remains strong. Between May 2015 and 2018, the U.S. added close to 7 million jobs, a growth rate of 5.0 percent. During this time, the fastest-growing jobs nationally were concentrated in service-providing industries, with health care service occupations in the top two positions (personal care aides and nurse practitioners).Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe occupations with the largest declines were more diverse. Perhaps surprisingly, computer programmers saw one of the largest decreases i n employment (-20 percent) over this time period, and the BLS projects continuing losses as a result of firms outsourcing this work overseas. The decline, however, is not representative of the industry as a whole. Other related, but more highly skilled, jobs experienced large employment gains. For example, software developer jobs grew 21 percent and the BLS projects a similar 24 percent increase between 2016 and 2026.Telemarketers experienced the largest percentage decrease in employment nationally. This decrease may partially be explained by call centers moving overseas, but automation (i.e. robocalling) is another likely culprit. Consistent with the data, researchers at Oxford University ranked telemarketer as the most likely job to be automated in the near future.Just as employment growth varies by occupation, it also varies widely by location. States with the highest employment growth are clustered in the West and the Southeast. States with lower employment growth, or even net j ob losses, are generally found in the Midwest and Northeast. Among all states, Utah had the largest percentage increase in jobs (9.9 percent) between 2015 and 2018, which is ersatzdarsteller the national average. To identify the fastest-growing job in each state, researchers at HeyTutor analyzed the most recent data available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. They calculated the employment growth rate between May 2015 and May 2018 for each occupation in each state. Only jobs with more than 100,000 employees nationally were included. Heres what they foundKey FindingsManufacturing jobs are dominant. Different from national-level trends, at the state level, manufacturing jobs- for example, machine tool setters, machine tool operators, and industrial machinery mechanics- appear frequently. Out of all jobs, manufacturing occupations are the fastest-growing in nine states.Teaching jobs are also highly represented. Seven states have some type of teaching job as the fastest-growing j ob. While typical K-12 jobs are absent from the final list, jobs such as graduate teaching assistants, health specialties teachers, vocational instructors, and substitute teachers are present.Personal care aide positions are growing. Also notable is the increase in personal care aides, which was the fastest-growing job in three states and the fastest-growing job in the nation overall at 62 percent. Because of the large aging bevlkerung in the U.S., this occupation is likely to see continued growth. The demand for personal care aides reflects a shift away from nursing homes and long-term care facilities toward in-home care.A mix of low and high-paying jobs. Among the fastest-growing jobs in each state, 30 fall below the national median wage of $38,640. The highest-paying jobs are in technology and financial services with software developers, financial advisors, and electronics engineers commanding the best pay.The fastest-growing job in each data used in this analysis is from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment Statistics survey. This survey covers all full-time and part-time employees in nonfarm industries. For each state, the number of employees in each occupation was compared between May 2018 and May 2015. The Bureau of Labor Statistics currently surveys only a portion of employers at each survey time in such a way that the published datasets represent three-year moving averages. The data for May 2018 is the most recent dataset, and the data for May 2015 is the most recent independent period for comparison.Statistics for all 50 states and the District of Columbia were analyzed. The growth rate in employment within each occupation was calculated as a percentage increase in employment between the two survey periods. Only occupations with at least 100,000 employees nationally in 2018 were analyzed. Catch-all occupational categories that included the phrase all others were also excluded. This article first appeared on Heytutor.com.
